England - North York Moors to Scarborough

The view across to Whitby Abbey ruins on the east cliff is very picturesque. The Abbey was originally founded here in 657 by St Hilda and the first King of Northumbria. This impressive stone structure, however, was mostly built in the 1220s. By that time it had become a  Benedictine abbey.
